"A monument to the Tlatelolco student massacre of 1968 in Mexico City, ten days before the Olympics. Hundred of students were disappeared. A grotesque tradition - the complete physical obliteration of students organizing for progressive change - was hurled into motion. This film is nearly wordless. In place of words, the enactment of violence against the images themselves, in a stagger towards commensurate aesthetics. Produced in collaboration with UNAM Filmoteca and Catedra Bergman UNAM.”

A Brief History of the Obliteration of Hope

A cross-generational binding of three filmmakers seeking alternative possibilities to the power structures they are inherently part of. Each woman extends her reach to a subject she is outside of. Vever grew out of the abandoned film projects of Maya Deren and Barbara Hammer. Shot at the furthest point of a motorcycle trip Hammer took to Guatemala in 1975, and laced through with Deren’s reflections of failure, encounter and initiation in 1950s Haiti.

Can we believe our eyes? The short films of Johann Lurf often explore the enigmatic territory between the real and the perceived, challenging our senses to comprehend visions and sounds taken from the environment around us by means of subtle, beautiful trompe l´oeil effects. Cavalcade, equally dazzling in 2D or 3D, sees him make a direct intervention into physical space for the first time.

SANDRA LAHIRE’s film uses a combination of live action and rostrum work to communicate the experience of anorexia and to analyse the cultural causes of the condition. The constantly recurring motif of cages, bars and railway lines reiterates the feeling of entrapment throughout the film.

Using a kaleidoscopic array of experimental techniques, this film explores uranium mining in Canada and its destructive effects on both the environment and the women working in the mines. A plethora of images ranging from the women at work to spine-chilling representations of cancerous bodies are accompanied by unnerving industrial sounds and straightforward information from some of the women.

“Night Dances is for my mother, who died whilst helping me to make this piano musical. The Dance of Death is bound to life – Lechaim – as we whirl together by Hebrew gravestones. A dreaming woman is ferried through our decaying city. This is the age of the Personal Computer – the Private Catacomb for the switched-on elite. Its dark doorways are for the wandering homeless… true survivors.” – S.L.

Night Dances

An exploration of avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren’s concepts of space, time and form through visits and projections filmed in her Los Angeles and New York homes by Barbara Hammer. Light projections in Deren’s intimate spaces evoke the past, providing entreé to reclaimed spaces, ones that inspired Hammer's own work. Time and space are collapsed as film locations of the 40s are re-imagined in the present. Voices from the past speaking from doorways, windows and picture frames include the then-current LA and NYC home owners, Deren's third husband, Teiji Ito, artist Carolee Schneemann, filmmaker Ross Lipmann, and others.

Maya Deren’s Sink

A collaborative 16mm film about mentoring and passing on the tradition of personal experimental filmmaking. Barbara Hammer, 70 years old, hands the camera off to Gina Carducci, a young queer filmmaker. Shooting during the last days of Coney Island’s Astroland amusement park in New York, the filmmakers find that the inevitable fact of aging echoes in the architecture of the space age themed park and in the emulsion of the film medium itself. Inspired by Shirley Clarke’s film Bridges Go Round, both filmmakers edited picture and sound separately, joining their films in the middle when they finished, making a true generational experiment.

Many cities or countries have a distinct malaise. They are places that could be Portugal, so sunk in a painful longing of the past, and where each tension of the present is only the tip of an iceberg that is explained in successive retreats that can go straight until origin of the species, at least. This feeling common to many latitudes is often presented as a diagnosis, a denial of a painful present as opposed to the desire to return to a glorious past.

America explores the intersection of race, history, and visual storytelling through a series of 12 silent, black and white, 35mm films that will be exhibited chronologically starting from 1915 to 1926. America was inspired by the MoMA's recent discovery of the earliest surviving footage for a feature film Lime Kiln Club Field Day, made by an interracial cast and crew for a Black audience. In the first quarter of the 20th century, 100 years ago, Black people and white people made films together with Black casts and narratives of joy. The majority of these films were lost or destroyed. Each of our 12 films represents one year and some ordinarily extraordinary things that happened in the United States
