Through the Teachers Digital Library, we have curated a special film program designed to inspire dialogue and reflection in classrooms across Kosovo. These films, selected for their compelling narratives, tackle the complexities of gender-based violence and provide an opportunity for educators to lead meaningful discussions. The monthly focus section of the Teachers Digital Library highlights four thought-provoking films, each shedding light on different aspects of abuse and resilience:

Sigurt by Ben Gorani and Vlera Dani:

This powerful film tells the story of a young girl whose home becomes an unsafe and toxic place due to abuse. Through a series of harrowing events, Sigurt explores the profound impact of violence on a child’s sense of security.

For the Sake of by Anisa Krasniqi and Bardha Kryeziu:

Like many women in Kosovo, the protagonist of this film endures decades of abuse within her own household. She suffers in silence for her children, for a roof over her head, and for the remnants of what once was love. The film poignantly portrays the sacrifices and struggles many women face in similar circumstances.

There Was a Time by Donjetë Berisha:

Set against the backdrop of Kosovo’s domestic abuse shelters, this film amplifies the voices of women who have experienced unspeakable physical, emotional, and sexual violence. An anonymous interviewee’s story is interwoven with evocative footage of Prishtina, giving a voice to those who have remained unheard.

I Am Not Just a... by Sonja Azizaj:

This short documentary dives into the complexities of living as a modern woman in urban Albanian society. Through the lens of Aleksandra’s story, the film takes viewers on a journey through the female experience, unraveling the layers beneath the word “woman” and challenging stereotypes.

Special Screening and Discussion

The campaign will culminate with a special screening of the short documentary Përtej Territ by Donjeta Mejtani on December 10 at 19:00 in DokuKino. This impactful film features three Kosovar women who bravely share their stories of surviving domestic violence, revealing their identities for the first time. These women also address their institutional demands for greater protection and support from the state of Kosovo.

Following the screening, a discussion session will provide an open platform to reflect on the pervasive nature of domestic violence. The conversation will underscore the reality that abuse affects individuals from diverse backgrounds—regardless of economic status, social position, education level, or upbringing. By sharing stories and insights, the session aims to foster solidarity and raise awareness about the shared, yet often silent, experiences of victims.

DokuFest’s participation in the "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence" campaign reflects its commitment to using cinema as a tool for education and social change. By addressing the issue of domestic violence through storytelling, we aim to break the silence, challenge societal norms, and empower communities to take action.
