For over a decade, the "Future is Here" film school has been a cornerstone of DokuFest’s mission to empower young voices in Kosovo. This initiative has provided a platform for self-expression, imparted essential filmmaking skills, and guided students in crafting compelling documentary narratives.

As we celebrate the 12th edition of this program, we look back at the incredible journey that has shaped the future of Kosovo’s cinematography, especially in areas where opportunities are scarce, such as editing, sound design, and post-production.

The program, generously supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, brought eight fresh short documentary films. These films, which will be showcased on August 6 during Talent Day at DokuFest, are a testament to the passion and dedication of DokuFest’s Film School students. Under the mentorship of Dea Gjinovci, Leart Rama, and Eroll Bilibani, these young filmmakers have honed their skills and brought their unique stories to life. The editing workshops, further enriched by alumni mentors Trendeline Halili, Flutura Balaj, and Hana Ahmeti, have ensured that each film is polished to perfection.

The diverse range of films produced this year is a reflection of the vibrant creativity and varied experiences of Kosovo’s youth. Each film is a labor of love, shaped by enlightening lectures and masterclasses from renowned filmmakers such as Andrijana Stojkovic, Samir Karahoda, Ilir Hasanaj, Isidore Bethel, and Norika Sefa.

This year we are showcasing an extraordinary diversity of narratives, each film a unique exploration of personal and societal themes. From the haunting depths of a girl's nightmare and her struggle with unspoken trauma to the rapid transformation of the music industry through artificial intelligence, these films capture the essence of modern challenges and changes.

"Escapee" tells the poignant story of Shkurte Krasniqi's fight for education and empowerment, while "Gjurmë" delves into the emotional complexities of loss. "Peroni 7" highlights Kosovo’s journey through visa liberalization and migration, weaving personal tales of new beginnings and farewells. 'Ratrak' brings skiers reunion, exploring challenges within the sport, that are brought to light through the reminiscences of two friends.

"Ustah" celebrates the intricate craftsmanship of local artisans, and "Wires Crossed" chronicles the reunion of two girls, their struggles with addiction, and the path to forgiveness.

Each film not only reflects the individual creativity of its young filmmaker but also offers a multifaceted view of contemporary life in Kosovo.

As these films premiere, they do more than showcase the talent of young filmmakers; they offer a window into the soul of Kosovo’s youth, their struggles, dreams, and relentless pursuit of expression. The "Future is Here" film school continues to be a beacon of hope and creativity, validating the experiences of Kosovo's young generation and strengthening the foundation of our national cinema talent.

Join us on August 6 to celebrate these remarkable films and the incredible journey of the 12th generation of "Future is Here." For the full program and to learn more about the stories that shape our future.
