DokuFest today announced opening and closing film for its 15th edition, taking place from 5 to 13 of August in Prizren, Kosovo.
Behemoth, a documentary by Chinese filmmaker and artist Zhao Liang is set to open the festival on Friday, August 5 and the landmark film Close Up by late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami will be the closing film of the festival.
Hailed as simultaneously intoxicating and terrifying glimpse at the ravages wrought upon Inner Mongolia by its coal and iron industries and elegantly blurring lines between video art and documentary, Behemoth is a stunning look at contemporary China by one of its most acclaimed filmmaker Zhao Liang, who draws inspiration from Dante’s The Divine Comedy to bring the vision of a journey across Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven in startlingly modern way.
Formally sophisticated and philosophically profound Close-Up is Abbas Kiarostamis’s most radical work and a fascinating investigation into cinema, artistic creation, identity and forgiveness.
Praised by Werner Herzog as “The greatest documentary on filmmaking I have ever seen” this remarkable, ironic and one-of-kind film masterpiece still remains the definitive film-on-film commentary.
