As we continue to explore anything and everything that connects music and film, we are thrilled to bring yet another selection of films that does just that. 6 films about music and musicians form this small yet eclectic selection, with some highlights in the form of Alex Ross Perry’s meta-documentary about legendary American indie band Pavement in Pavements, and Justin Kurzel’s foray into documentary with Ellis Park, a film about the life of a key member of iconic bands The Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, and his passion project of helping a wildlife sanctuary in the forests of Sumatra.
From Italy comes Canone Effimero by The De Serio brothers, a film and a journey that reveals vibrant folk traditions, full of unique regional songs and music.
Kosovo’s underground music scene is portrayed in Maddie Gwinn’s gentle Palace of Youth through observation of three indie pop and post-punk bands of post-war Kosovo, while the punk scene of Slovenia between 1977 and 1985 is depicted in Andrej Košak’s rich and informative documentary Punk Under Communist Regime.
The selection is rounded up with a film about a visionary artist, composer and performer titled Monk in Pieces. An inspiration to many, including Björk, David Byrne and David Bowie, this is a film about Meredith Monk, a true genius.
