After a sixteen year absence, Maša returns to Belgrade, the city of her childhood. Although she was only nine years old when she left Belgrade, the comeback evokes repressed feelings and memories of some key events that have changed her and her mother’s life. It is a story of continues emigration from one country to another in the hope of finding justice. It is a film about memories, emigration and the search for a life of dignity. Three stories intertwine, that of the author, Maša, her mother’s colleague, and Maša’s nanny, and through them emerges the story of a city which forced a small two-member family into exile.
Maša Drndić was born in Belgrade in 1982. In 1992 she moves to Rijeka, Croatia. She graduates from the Middle School of Applied Arts, in Rijeka in 2002 and from the Academy of Applied Arts, Department of Graphics in 2008. Maša Drndić starts working on documentaries in the non-profit association Filmaktiv in which she creates her first films. In 2007 she completed the French School Atelier Varan – Atelier Varan Belgrade workshop for documentary during which she made a documentary film about her life trauma.
