Seven months after Donald Trump assumes the American presidency, acclaimed filmmaker Brett Story journeyed to all five boroughs of New York City asking people a simple question: what are your hopes for the future? The result is a precise and artfully framed meditation, both incisive and moving, that encapsulates the uneasy way many of us live now. Sam Adams in 'Slate' writes, "Even face to face with a bleak future, The Hottest August is stepped in (the) kind of delight...that reminds us that there's beauty in the world, and a future that's worth fighting for."
Brett Story is an award-winning nonfiction filmmaker based in Toronto whose films have screened at festivals internationally, including the Viennale, True/False, Oberhausen, It’s All True, and Dok Leipzig. Her 2016 feature documentary, The Prison in Twelve Landscapes was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and was a nominee for Best Feature Documentary at the Canadian Screen Awards.
