Taklif is an abstract yet lyrical story of religion as forced into a girl’s life, seen from the innocent perspective of the child. It conveys the violence of early marriage and rites of passage, as faced by pre-pubescent girls in an Islamic context.
Maryam Tafakory is an animator and filmmaker living in London. She explores new forms of visual storytelling in her documentary work, using abstracted, symbolic and textual narratives to convey the portrayal of issues, struggles and their screen representation. Currently experimenting using elements of minimal text, object, performance and drawing, her work mostly draws on her personal experience of being brought up in an Islamic country.
