Synopsis

A remote village in the Northwest of Russia. A mental asylum is located in an old wooden house. The place and its inhabitants seem to be untouched by civilization. In this pristine setting no articulate human voice is heard, and pain is muted.

Director Biography

Sergei Loznitsa (b. 1964, Baranovichi, Belarus) graduated from Moscow’s VGIK. His documentary Portrait (2002) was awarded a Special Jury Mention at KVIFF 2003. The medium-length picture Artel (2006) won the best short documentary category at KVIFF 2007. Karlovy Vary audiences were also treated to his features My Joy (2010) and In the Fog (2012), the latter winning the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes IFF. At present he is working on another feature, Babi Yar.
