Since the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in 2009, only four doctors in the United States continue to perform third-trimester abortions. These physicians, all colleagues of Dr. Tiller, sacrifice their safety and personal lives in the name of their fierce, unwavering conviction to help women. But for some in the pro-life movement, these doctors are “murderers” who must be stopped.
Brooklyn-based filmmaker Martha Shane produced and codirected Bi the Way, which screened at SXSW in 2008. Shane recently completed a short called Make the People Happy and is now making the feature Island of Destruction. After Tiller is her directorial debut. Filmmaker and curator Lana Wilson is also based in Brooklyn. As the film and dance curator for Performa, she has produced performances by artists including Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin and French choreographer Boris Charmatz. After Tiller is her first film.
