Communion - Jaan Toomik

The story of a middle aged man and woman: their relationship, the woman’s’ desperate attempts to get pregnant and the man’s fear of commitment. The painterly imagery and the cyclic nature of the movie, which uses no dialogue, occasionally take us from the main narrative to the atmosphere of Toomik’s earlier video installations. This visual treat, shot on 35mm, could only have been conceived by an adventurer, an artist not adhering to known genres. The film is an ode to the power of the image.

Director

Jaan Toomik was born on October 2, 1961 in Tartu, Estonia. Between 1985 and 1991 he studied at the faculty of painting of the Estonian Academy of Arts, where he is now a professor. His video art has been exhibited in Estonia as well as internationally, amongst others in New York, Madrid and London. He has received numerous international awards for his works, including the State prize of the Republic of Estonia in 1999.
