If you love films, and love being outside, then combine those loves by taking in a movie at Kino Lumi, as I did. Being outside is thought to have numerous benefits, such as the calming effect of the sights and sounds of nature, the beauty of the night sky, and simple fresh air.

It gives one a feeling of spaciousness, of openness, even tranquility, especially at night. Combining nature with entertainment is simply golden, who thought of this?! Enjoying a film almost prone in a beanbag next to a lovely river is something everyone should experience, at least once in their life.

Monday’s showing of What Did You Dream Last Night, Parajanov? directed by Faraz Fesharaki, provided me and my friend Michael with such an opportunity at Kino Lumi. To view the film in this peaceful outdoor setting added a new dimension to my film watching senses.

The film was well paced, full of back and forth family dialogue. It showcased for us the power of technology, useful in keeping a family contacted with each other, despite the fact this family was spread from Iran to Germany.

The father yearns for his son Parajanov to return to Iran and he knows this, but is careful not to promise too much to his father. The eyes are the window to the soul, and the father explores his son’s eyes for the answer. Some truly heart felt and touching moments are captured by their webcams.

The joking interplay between father and mother, and their love for each other, shined through, just like the stars above us. The way that Parajanov longed for his parents’ company was also evident, and bittersweet.

There were plenty of jokes between Parajanov and his best friend Rahi as well, as they discussed the pros and cons of life in Europe, versus life in Iran. Each spot on the earth offers its own benefits, but there is no place like home, and they both know this.

As the movie played, I thought of my own family, in France and Kansas, and knew that I should do as Parajanov did, and speak more frequently with them, one Skype phone call at a time.
