In the article In Defense of the Poor Image, the well-known artist Hito Steyerl explores the meaning, distribution and use of images that have poor resolution. The author delves into the infinity of digital images, going beyond their damage and lack of high aesthetic values, seeing them as sources that can teach us a lot about cultural and political life. The film The Quality of Image by director Sezer Salihu is an experiment with the use of Google Maps images of roads in Greece. The film is actually a research that highlights the subjective and objective aspects of indicators and living standards.
Do the images illustrate the text or does the text explain the image? In the film The Quality of Image, these two types of communication play with each other, where the text does the work of the image, and the image does the work of the text. As we see the streets and alleys of Greece, we navigate the operational images through explanations that capture different themes about the happiness and security index taken from the European Commission's Quality of Life Report in 2023. Translating the percentages into images from this report, the director lays out the role of images in the re-production of current capitalist power relations, where the distinction between social subjugation and machine slavery is critical.
