Synopsis

Over the past thousand years the phenomenon of the ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’ (the New Dutch Herring) has become a national cultural icon. This documentary is told from the herring fishers’ perspective in which the romance, the comradeship and herring itself are celebrated, but the film also chronicles the erosion and decline of one of the final remaining Dutch Glories.

Director Biography

Leonard Retel Helmrich’s documentaries have won acclaim at multiple film festivals worldwide, earning the Sundance Film Festival’s inaugural World Documentary Award and a Joris Ivens Award at IDFA Amsterdam. HETTY NAAIJKENS-RETEL HELMRICH has produced several award-winning documentaries and won the 2004 Martha Bering Award for Dutch women in film and media.
