Qihuo’s first menstruation brings the “Changing Skirt” ceremony, a rite of passage marking her transition into womanhood. With her parents away and her grandfather gone, she and her two best friends embark on a journey to buy the skirt. Blending documentary and fiction, the film follows the girls through mountain landscapes and fleeting adventures, capturing the final moments of childhood before the responsibilities of adult life begin to take shape.
Directors' Biography
Dongnan Chen creates films that transform lived experience into cinematic fables, exploring identity and the space between reality and imagination. Her work has screened at Sundance, IDFA, IFFR, and MoMA. Her second feature, Whispers in May, won the DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX 2026.
