Inspired by the 1980 vinyl record Rhymes and Songs for OPEC, this essay film uses songs and rare archival footage to reconsider oil not as a commodity, but as a political force that supported Palestinian liberation and strengthened Pan-Arab solidarity in the 1960s and 1970s. The film is the final chapter in filmmaker Sanaz Sohrabi’s trilogy examining the relationship between image-making, archival technologies, and the visual cultures of resource extraction in Iran and West Asia.
Directors' Biography
Sanaz Sohrabi (b. 1988, Tehran) is a Montréal-based artist-filmmaker and researcher of visual culture. Her work explores resource sovereignty and postcolonial ecologies. Shown at Berlinale, IFFR, and the Ljubljana Biennial, An Incomplete Calendar (2026) is her debut feature documentary.
