Black Girl (1966), the feature debut of acclaimed Senegalese filmmaker and novelist Ousmane Sembène, follows a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple, only to find herself trapped in a life of isolation and exploitation. Featuring a powerful performance by Mbissine Thérèse Diop, the film is both a moving human drama and a sharp critique of colonialism, widely regarded as a landmark of African cinema.

Restored by Cineteca di Bologna/ L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in association with the Sembène Estate, Institut National de l’Audiovisuel, INA, Eclair laboratories and the Centre National de Cinématographie. Restoration funded by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project.

Directors' Biography
Ousmane Sembène (1923–2007) was born in southern Senegal and is regarded as a pioneer of African cinema. Expelled from school at a young age, he worked various jobs in Dakar before serving in a colonial infantry unit during World War II. He later moved to Marseille, France, where his experiences as a worker and migrant shaped the perspective that would define his filmmaking.
