Synopsis

Sculptor Makolies is filmed working on a sculpture in the middle of a quarry in Swiss Saxony. The quarry workers go about their work around him. Both the work in the quarry and the work on the large figure in sandstone require strenght and conscientiousness. This film observers both types of work, without comparing them.

Director Biography

The documentarian Jürgen Böttcher, alias the painter Strawalde, is one of the great artists of the GDR. Throughout his life he has been maladjusted. With his tendency to experiment, he has a decisive influence on artists of subsequent generations. His avant-garde films are groundbreaking in terms of content and form. The director seeks the meaning and beauty of life in the small, everyday gestures and signs that are often overlooked. His films about the world of work and art thus become impressive and unmistakable portraits, his protagonists - kitchen women, washerwomen, steel workers, shunters - radiate dignity.
