In an evocative soundscape Tan juxtaposes her father’s letters from the late 1980s with documentary images from the silent era. Steadily we get to know him, his life and the times he lives in. Effortlessly he switches from details of domestic life to momentous historical events as we see unforgettable scenes of The Netherlands from 100 years ago. Embracing both the personal and the universal – it is as if the letter-writer discovers these images together with us, the viewer.
