Synopsis

For international art star, Vanessa Beecroft, there is no boundary between her life and her art. Filmmaker, Pietra Brettkelly, follows Beecroft during a 16-month journey to the Sudan, a place where Beecroft has been drawn for inspiration. Her bond to Africa has deepened through her obsessive desire to adopt two orphaned babies. In a highly controversial photograph, Beecroft nurses the black babies at her exposed white breasts, and as the complexities of the international adoption become apparent, the process creates ethical and emotional waves that travel across continents.  Brettkelly provides a fascinating and masterful portrait of a talented narcissist who displays a powerful vortex of provocation, emotional instability, manipulation, and artistic brilliance.

Director Biography

Is a New Zealand documentary director and producer, best known for the film The Art Star and the Sudanese Twins. Brettkelly was a journalist before becoming a film maker.
