Synopsis

After learning to physically function again after a brain-damaging coma caused from a severe beating by five men outside a local bar, Mark Hogancamp builds a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard that he calls Marwencol. From this three-dimensional, tiny world, he creates life-like photographs detailing Marwencol’s many relationships and dramas, helping himself to recover his hand-eye coordination and begin to deal with the psychic wounds of his vicious attack. When Hogancamp’s story and photographs are discovered, a prestigious New York gallery sets up a show and suddenly the still-scarred and frightened man has to deal with his bespoke and private therapy becoming public “art,” forcing him to choose between the safety of his fantasy life in Marwencol, and the real world he has avoided since the attack.
