“The cinema can be very humbling,” says French Nouvelle Vague pioneer, Agnes Varda, at the outset of this poignant doc, the last film she completed before passing away this past March at the age of 90. A fascinating glimpse into her magical and highly unconventional sixty plus years of fiction, long and short documentary, photography and installation art. Not just a collection of clips and anecdotes, Varda revisits many of her film’s original locations, offering precious insight into her creative method. Ultimately, Varda by Agnès is a moving elegy to Varda, the New Wave doyenne who infused inspiration, passion and spontaneity into her timeless art.
