Still from Between my flesh and the world's fingers - Talena Sanders

June 27th, 2018

Curated by Pamela Cohn

I never give my real self. I have a hundred sides, and I turn first one way and then the other. I am playing a deep game. –Mary MacLane, the wild woman of Butte, Montana

This has been the year of the #MeToo watershed, a social media-based explosion of public confession and seemingly cathartic swapping of tales of oppression about all of the limits trespassed and nasty acts perpetrated on women and female-identifying human beings. We’ve become so used to holding deep-seated secrets as an aspect of girlhood and womanhood where our identities become crushed and distilled into episodes that leave lifelong residues of trauma and shame. How to be? How to act? How to look? What to say? What not to say? The daily inner dialogue most women experience can be an unceasing impediment to becoming a fully realised person.

In a small but powerful strand of films of diverse female stories from the past, present and future, this year DokuFest presents a compilation of experience that moves beyond victimhood, beyond the limitations society has set for us, beyond what’s at stake when we allow others to treat us as something to be studied, manhandled, parsed and de-humanized as if we are amoebas in bikinis lying in some petri dish waiting for further disintegration until we are mere vapours in the air.
Using whip-smart, humorous, full-throated voices, these makers and their protagonists together create innovative film language to traverse the minefield between the abuses of the outer world and the agency and galvanizing vibrations that can occur when we are simply able to call our lives our own, to be able to inhabit “rooms of our own” where we can truly be free.

As the American feminist icon Gloria Steinem has said: “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.” Come get in touch with your feminine side. And if you can’t manage to do that, then just sit still and listen.
